Teaching Analytics Visually

Engaging students visually while teaching the hard subjects.

This Java applet was developed as a visual gamification experiment part of the Visual Analytics Collaboratory to study students’ ability to learn complex statistical concepts when assisted with simple visualisation aids. The main idea of the applet is for students to follow a journey from concepts which are intuitive and easy to comprehend (such as people walking into a shop – see above) through the notions which are abstract and unfamiliar but which are the focus of their learning (such as statistical methods). In the process students gradually peel off the layers of reality (as above) and layers of visualisation (as follows) to finally arrive at hard-core analytic concepts.
