OLT Project Activities

This was a two year project running from January 2013 to December 2014, with extension till April 2015. The development of the educational experiences and the technology underpinning the project are tightly integrated and the project team used the high-level instructional design model ADDIE (analyse, design, develop, implement and evaluate) to inform design, development and delivery. The planning and execution of the project was guided by the conceptual roadmap shown in the following figure.

Phase 1 – Preparation and initial capacity building

January to June 2013

  • Conduct literature review – Business Analytics theory and prior work
    • Develop detailed project plans for each participant
    • Establish a reference group and its terms of reference
    • Identify curriculum areas, teachers and student groups
    • Identify tools and instruments, methods and strategies for research and development
    • Establish the Collaboratory online space and a project website for dissemination
    • Appoint software / media developers, research associate and assistant Project Manager
  • Develop the technology / software infrastructure for the Collaboratory
  • Acquire and develop cases, data and tool resources for the Collaboratory
  • Obtain the required ethics approvals
Phase 2 – Capacity building: Development, pilot and community of practice

July 2013 – December 2013

  • Development of the Collaboratory pilot
    • Develop the Collaboratory pilot
    • Evaluate the Collaboratory pilot / video focus group
    • Refine the Collaboratory and make it student ready
    • Refine and enrich the cases, data and tool resources for the Collaboratory
  • Develop the Business Analytics curriculum resources to be used with the Collaboratory
    • Develop teaching and learning materials, projects and assessment resources, as well as teaching guides
    • Train Business Analytics teachers in the use of the Collaboratory
  • Engage with the community of Business Analytics educators and practitioners
    • Prepare the initial findings from the participating institutions
    • Publish results at a national conference on Information Systems (ACIS 2013)
    • Organise and conduct a national workshop on Business Analytics and data visualisation (at ACIS 2013)
    • Establish a national community of Business Analytics academics and practitioners
  • Evaluate the current methods of Business Analytics Teaching & Learning – Business Analytics practice / survey, 2 focus groups, lab study
  • Project team conference 1
    • Develop a draft framework for teaching and learning Business Analytics intuitively and collaboratively
    • Report to and consult with the reference group
Phase 3 – Application and improvement: Data collection, analysis, refinement and publication

January 2014 – June 2014

  • Cycle 1 – Data collection, analysis and refinement at partner institutions
    • Use the Collaboratory in class and online
    • Formative evaluation of the partner-based Collaboratory / survey, 2 focus groups, lab study
    • Refine the Collaboratory
    • Refine the cases, data and tool resources to support the Collaboratory
    • Refine the framework for teaching and learning Business Analytics intuitively and collaboratively
  • Cycle 2 – Data collection, analysis and refinement at partner institutions
    • Use the Collaboratory in class and online
    • Formative evaluation of the partner-based Collaboratory / survey, 2 focus groups, lab study
    • Refine the Collaboratory
    • Refine the cases, data and tool resources to support the Collaboratory
    • Refine the framework for teaching and learning Business Analytics intuitively and collaboratively
  • Reflection, reporting and dissemination in the community of Business Analytics education and practice
    • Deployment of the Collaboratory for the community use
    • Report to and consult with the national community of Business Analytics practice and a reference group
    • Invite members of the community to the Collaboratory
Phase 4 – Dissemination: Deployment, reporting and application in the community of practice

July 2014 – December 2014

  • Cycle 3 – Data collection, analysis and refinement in the community of Business Analytics education and practice
    • Use the Collaboratory in the community
    • Formative evaluation of the community-based Collaboratory / survey, 2 focus groups, lab study
    • Refine the Collaboratory with the community collaboration
    • Refine the cases, data and tool resources with the community collaboration
  • Reflection and dissemination in the community of Business Analytics education and practice
    • Consolidate findings from the participating institutions and community collaborators
    • Publish results at international conferences on Information Systems (ECIS 2014, AMCIS 2014)
    • Publish results in international journals on Business Analytics, Information Systems and Education
    • Present results at the second national workshop on Business Analytics and data visualisation (at ACIS 2014)
  • Project team conference 2
    • Finalise the framework for teaching and learning Business Analytics intuitively and collaboratively
    • Report to and consult with the reference group
  • Commission conduct of independent summative evaluation of the project / interviews
Finalisation – Project completion and future work

January 2015 – April 2015

  • Final Project Report plus an Achievement Statement to the OLT

May 2015 – Future

  • Further work on the Collaboratory tools and publications
